It sounds like a Mission Impossible, but Tom Cruise wants to make a film star out of David Beckham.
Tom, 50, says he is desperately searching for the right script, telling me: “I’d love to do action movies with Beckham. He would be great, he could kick ass.”
Well, there’s no doubt he can kick. And he has previous experience. Who can forget his appearances in Goal! And, er, Goal! II. Although he was strangely overlooked for a part in Bend It Like Beckham.
Speaking at last night’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol premiere at the Imax cinema in Waterloo, Tom told us: “David would have to teach me to play soccer first.”
The Hollywood A-lister was joined by his Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol co-stars Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and Lea Seydoux for the action film's screening last night. After posing for pictures, the actor spent over an hour meeting pretty much every person in the crowd.
And the actor, who's 50 , said he had no intention of slowing down. "I'm just going to keep going, as long as I can do it. I love making action movies," he said.
Tom and David, whose wives Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham are also friends, have hung out together for years.
Their friendship was cemented when Tom sent David, 36, the velvet jacket he wore in Jerry Maguire after finding out he and Vicky saw the film on their first date.
A source says: “David has been linked with Hollywood a number of times but Tom is the only one he’d ever take up, he thinks Tom’s a legend.
“He’d still like to have a sporting element to it. Tom’s a sporty guy, too, so any collaboration would be about something competitive.”
And friends or not, Tom still wants to be the hero. He previously said of Becks: “He would make a great baddie.”
Meanwhile, Becks has got some balloons to buy, as Tom hits the big 5-0 next year and wants some fun.
He said last night: “I’m gonna have a party in every country and I’m gonna go, ‘Look, I’m 50 man, where’s my party?’”
Ya hear that, David? Lights, camera, party action.
