An inside and close source to Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels claims the German defender could be tempted into a move to Manchester United.
Hummels’ future at the German club has been thrown into doubt this summer following rumours of possible interest from Barcelona and the way Dortmund have been outgunned by Bayern Munich in German and European football.
Manchester United have now emerged as the apparent favourites for his signature, as Jurgen Klopp seems destined to watch the Borussia Dortmund team he’s created fall apart around him.
However, the legitimacy of the rumours and the realistic basis in which they have been made is highly questionable. The source told SportsDirect News in an interview:
“Mats wants to sort out his future as soon as possible and United are a team that interests him.”
There are plenty of reasons why United fans shouldn’t get too excited by this quote because it is fundamentally flawed in several ways.
SportsDirect News ran that story about Wayne Rooney reportedly ready to join Newcastle United before it was taken down from the site and apologies issued to the necessary parties.
Hummels himself has also made it fairly clear that he sees his future in Germany, which destroys the idea that he’s looking to leave.
It’s also questionable as to why he would turn down the chance to join Barcelona, becoming the primary defender in their back four, only to switch to Manchester United, a club with a more competitive group of defenders. Hummels said in an interview with Kicker:
“There was never any contact. Neither with Barcelona nor with any other team. If at some point there’s something to these things, then I will say so. And when I now say that these speculations are baseless, that should be enough.”
The big giveaway that there may not be any truth behind the apparent quote is the fact that the source is not attributed.
Mats Hummels Mats Hummels to Manchester United rumours are baseless
Mats Hummels has a large contract at Borussia Dortmund, which doesn’t expire until the summer of 2017.
He’s the leading defender in the Dortmund back four and is regularly appearing for the German national side thanks to his exploits at club level, which have made him one of the most sought after defenders in Europe.
There’s no doubt he would be a fantastic signing for Manchester United but it looks like a possible deal which has been born out of speculation, started by those Barcelona rumours.
