Suarez to stay or go?

Luis Suarez has today reconfirmed that he is unsettled at Liverpool, and stoked the fires in the media that he could leave Anfield this summer. The Uruguayan has been at the centre of a number of controversies since moving to England from Ajax, and as such could well leave Merseyside for a new start elsewhere this summer.

Suarez has made a number of comments to media in his homeland that lead the neutral to believe that he wants a move away from Liverpool. Real Madrid are believed to be admirers according to the Betfair odds, while the South American has also been linked with switches to Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco.

The forward’s questionable antics since moving to Liverpool have understandably drawn media criticism, not to mention a lot of betting activity surrounding his future on Betfair and other bookmakers. Racism, allegations of diving and biting Branislav Ivanovic have been the most major of a number of controversies surrounding the striker, and although Suarez claims his innocence, there is no smoke without fire.

Despite this, Suarez’s abilities as a footballer are also unquestionable. The talented forward lead the Liverpool frontline single-handedly for the majority of the last campaign, and has shown breathtaking skills, close control and eye for goal in his time in England.

If Liverpool were to lose Suarez, despite the baggage that comes with him, it would be a major blow for the club. Replacing a player of his abilities would be difficult for a club not playing in the Champions League, and would put a lot of pressure on the likes of Phillipe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge to provide the goals that Suarez has delivered in the last two seasons.

For Suarez if there is concrete interest from Real Madrid, it is hard to blame him for wanting to leave. The chance to play for one of the biggest clubs in world football, in the Champions League and alongside top-quality players is understandable. A pay increase and a new start, away from the at-times damning British media, would be something that would appeal to the Uruguyan.

However, Suarez also has a chance to stand up to his critics, and prove himself on the pitch with Liverpool next season. There is a unanimous feeling that Brendan Rodgers is slowly but surely building something with the Merseyside club, and Suarez has the chance to be a central figure in that. Liverpool have stuck by him through all his reported misdemeanours, and a scandal-free season could well allow him to clear his name.

In the end, it will really depend on which teams come in for Suarez, and how much they are willing to pay. If Madrid do come in with a considerable offer it is hard to see a situation where Liverpool will be able to reject it, especially with the player’s wishes in mind. That said, if the Reds’ valuation is not met, English football fans could well have another season of great highs and lows from the controversial striker.
